can i just take a moment of your time to remind you that in a perfect world kaidan gets to wake up to this every morning? you’d never be able to guess that this guy — yeah the guy with the odd sock on his head hanging from his ears, grinning like he’s a kid again and asking if kaidan wants one of his special blastcafé’s instead of just normal coffee — actually saved the galaxy and almost killed himself doing it. sure there’s some scars and his right arm will probably never be the same and his knees will probably always be stiff with those artificial implants to help him walk again, but for kaidan it’s all worth it to wake up to this goofy face every day and just know that he’s real and he’s there — close enough to touch and kiss and feel his warm breath against his cheeks. more than that, kaidan can smell shepard’s morning breath and that’s great too because that’s what makes shepard shepard and not commander shepard, first human spectre and savior of the galaxy.
sure, he’s all that too, but to kaidan this is the man he loves and the one who loves him right back — the one who shows it by leaving his laundry lying around their home, leaving the bathroom light on at night, using all the hot water (only to suggest they should have shared the shower to save water) and sleeping late on sunday mornings with his back against kaidan’s chest, wearing the n7 hoodie he never could part with even after he retired.
kaidan loves shepard through it all, whilst they lie in bed at night, shepard’s fingers tracing the ring on kaidan’s hand and reliving the moment he’d asked that question.
in a perfect world this is kaidan’s life and he’d go through it all again — saren, horizon, the war, everything — just to have it.
